Clinic Presenter Phil Edholm

Phil Edholm has modeled in HO, but now focuses primarily on O scale and On30. He builds modules as part of the California Central Coast On30 Modular group and as part of the ACCRS O scale layout at the Alameda Fairgrounds. He has done several clinics on structure and scenery, as well as how to use technology (3D printing, computers, etc.) in modeling. Hi focus is on building prototypically correct models with full interiors and details. As part of his modeling, he incorporates a range of techniques and is always on the lookout for ways to do better modeling, faster and cheaper.

CLINIC #1 of 2 - Make and Take – Multi-scale Handcar Shed $$$

Must Register for this clinic. Cost is $17 for HO & N and $30 for O & S.

Join this Make and Take session where you will build an entry level craftsman type kit of a prototype Southern Pacific handcar shed. The model, by New Creations Victorian Railroad Buildings is of the prototype located in Woodford, California. The shed is typical of those found on most railroads n North America during the steam and transition periods. The kit is available in four scales for this Make and Take; N, HO, S and O.

This Make and Take focuses on using/learning techniques on this small building that can be used in other and larger structures. Using the techniques covered in this clinic, the clinician won both First Place Scratch built Structure and Best of Show at the 2023 PCR Convention.

The following are some of the techniques that will be covered. New Creations will pre-dye the wood parts for quicker assembly. During the clinic, the walls and trim wood will be finished separately and then assembled for best results.

  • Wood Preparation
  • Using files and sandpaper to fit all parts
  • Interior bracing and supports.
  • Creating end board gaps in the platform deck for realism.
  • Distressing wood for a better-looking finished model. This will include multiple techniques.
         - The clinician will provide each builder with a 3D printed woodgrain tool.
         - Each participant will need to bring 7 used or new Xacto blades to fit in the provided holder.
  • Touching up and highlighting after distressing using shoe/alcohol-based dyes to color the wood for realistic appearance.
  • Adding interior framing for open door viewing.
  • Finish painting techniques to achieve the look you want from newly painted to dilapidated.
  • We will use dry-brush techniques to finish the walls.
         - The clinician will bring some high-end military modeling dry brushes.
         - Attendees are asked to bring a stiff bristled brush for individual use.
  • After dry-brushing, we will wire brush to complete the slightly degraded to deteriorated paint.
  • We will use shading to reflect sun aging in different areas.
  • Adding Details
  • Either installing rails onto the deck platform or creating rub marks form moving a hand truck directly on the wood.
  • Adding nail holes and other details to improve the final model.
  • Adding hinges, either detail part or paper
  • Assembly techniques to assure a square building.

  • Roof installation options and techniques.
  • We will discuss using the provided roofing versus making your own.
  • Make rolled roofing from black construction paper by cutting into strips and sanding for ragged aged edges.
  • Weathering
  • Weathering using dry chalk and washes.
  • Ground spatter using Vallejo Pigments.

  • The cost for this clinic varies by scale: $17 for HO & N and $30 for O & S.

You are required to bring the following tools:
  • Xacto or equivalent knife with spare blade
  • Medium paint brush
  • File and/or sanding sticks
  • Tacky Glue
  • Craft Paint of color you want for your shed.
  • A 12” piece of appropriate Code rail to mount on the deck.
  • The following will be available for shared use, but if you can bring your own it would be better:
  • Straightedge
  • Squaring tool
  • Small Clamps
  • Alcohol washes and some paint colors will be available at the clinic. If you have a specific paint color your want to paint your shed, bring it with you.

You will leave with a completed structure that can go directly to a spot on your layout.
You wil also leave with new techniques for building better models.

CLINIC #2 of 2 - Building Structures Two Ways – Acrylic and 3D Framing

Phil will discuss building ruggedized contest quality O scale structures for a module using two techniques. First, he will cover using an acrylic box as the structure for a large building. Two additional structures, one large and one small, use 3D filament printed framing with traditional material for both strength and appearance. In these buildings, the framing and roof are 3D printed with all floors, siding, and roofing being more traditional modeling materials. The clinic will cover design, building, coloring and finishing for the structures. The two structures featured in this clinic respectively won First Place in Structures and Best in Show at the 2023 PCR Convention.
